interview by Rob Schwartz
WHO?MAG: Introduce Aaron Kane. AARON KANE: Aaron Kane aka “AK” is a singer/songwriter/arranger from Newport News, VA that has been doing music from a very early age. I have had no musical training. Everything I do is a God given talent! I’m just a man searching for the right path that god has chosen for me.
WHO?MAG: What’s the Aaron Kane sound? AARON KANE: My sound is very new! Something very different! I have been influenced by all kinds of different genders because I’ve been doing music so long. I have a sound mix of R&B/soul/hip-hop that is infused with just a dash of pop. It’s something that nobody has done or heard before, but it is something that a large range of people can relate to.
WHO?MAG: How did you hook up with Boyz II Men? AARON KANE: Well, I was down with Michael Bivins of “New Edition” and “BBD” back in the day. I have known those guys since day one of their careers. I was even in the green room when they were on TV for the very first time. It was Video Soul (BET) with Donnie Simpson. Do you remember that? I have been thru a lot with those guys. I still talk with them to this day.
WHO?MAG: Tell me about the single “Gotta Love”. AARON KANE: “Gotta Love” was a single off of my freshman album called “Soul Reflections”. I grinded my ass off and sold close to 30,000 units myself. It reached all the way up to #7 on Billboards R&B sales chart. Because of my hustle, the National Grammy Committee decided to listen to my album and actually put me in the 1st round (8 different categories) for the 2007 Grammy’s. It was amazing!
WHO?MAG: Why did you move to New jersey? AARON KANE: Because I knew Boyz II Men and worked with them for years. They were starting their own label called Stone Creek. They signed me as a songwriter/artist and moved me up north to Germantown, PA. The studio was in Gladwyne. They released one artist called Uncle Sam. And because of the poor success Tommy Matolla pulled the plug. Everybody that was on the label got dropped. So now I’m living across the bridge in NJ doing my own thing!
WHO?MAG: What do you feel was the biggest obstacle you faced so far? AARON KANE: Damn Rob, where should I start? There are so many! This business that we call music is no joke. If it was easy, everybody would be doing it. Even though at times it does seem like everybody is. I guess maintaining strong relationships with executives and investors because when you don’t have the dollars to do it yourself you have to find that person that does.
WHO?MAG: How do you feel about music today? AARON KANE: Man, I’m a music lover period! I love the music of today, yesterday, and tomorrow. I just try to weed out the really bad stuff and enjoy the people that have that god given true talent.
WHO?MAG: Tell me about the new album? AARON KANE: Awww dude! This album is crazy!! It is definitely the best stuff I have ever done. I got some of the hottest producers in the game today like Beats Etc., Hit Squad, Nokio from the group “Dru Hill”, and even got a joint with Paris Hilton. So everything is covered, you know what I’m saying? Everybody should go get a copy, for real! You can pick it up at CDBABY.com, my page on myspace, which is www.myspace.com/aaronkane7, and in those Ma and Pop stores like iTunes and The Music Factory. So go and support Indy artist all day!
WHO?MAG: What’s next for Aaron Kane? AARON KANE: Promoting the hell out of this new album!!!!! Hitting radio and DJs! Trying to move these units so I can get back up on that Billboard Magazine again. Doing mad shows! I got a lot of good things going on down at the casinos this summer. So everybody come out and have a good time! I’m doing my new video to my 1st single off the “Hear What I’m Sayin” album. It’s called “That’s Hot”. I will be on MTV this summer on PDiddys “Making the Band IV “. Just grinding like I always do. Like I always have and like I always will! I would just like to say thanks to Rob and the whole WHO?MAG staff. You guys are the truth for real! And Rob you know that I support anything you do,man. Its always some “big time sh*t”. Peace and God Bless.
